In December 2024 I was given the opportunity to work and film in Orlando.
I couldn't wait to go, especially as the children were going to be joining me on the adventure. The last time I visited Florida was when Rocco and Tahlia were just 1 and 2 so I figured that now they are almost 10 and 11, they would be the perfect ages to go back!Orlando, Florida, is a dream destination for families, it can be a magical and action-packed adventure and we most definitely packed it all in!
If you’re planning a trip to Orlando with a 10- and 11-year-old, let me tell you, you’re in for a whirlwind of thrills, laughter, and perhaps a few moments of wondering, “Why did I wear these shoes?” Orlando is where family holidays become legendary, with something for everyone, whether your kids are coaster junkies, animal lovers, or aspiring wizards. Here’s the ultimate guide to surviving (and loving) every minute of your magical, action-packed adventure.
The Theme Parks: Where the Magic and Mayhem Begin
Universal Studios & Islands of Adventure
This place is a dream for tweens who live for adventure. From dodging Dementors in Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey to escaping a Velociraptor on VelociCoaster , Universal is all about adrenaline. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is jaw-dropping, you’ll think you’ve stepped straight into the films. We drank butterbeer, waved interactive wands, and rode the Hogwarts Express so many times we practically became regulars.
Oh, and if your kids are Marvel fans, The Incredible Hulk Coaster will have them screaming louder than you ever thought possible (in the best way).
Pro Tip : Get the Express Pass . Seriously, do not even think about skipping this. It’s the golden ticket to riding all the big attractions without queuing for hours. Your sanity will thank you.
Magic Kingdom
This is Disney at its most magical. Yes, it’s more sugary-sweet than thrilling, but there’s something about walking down Main Street, USA, with Cinderella’s Castle ahead of you that just gets you. Highlights for tweens? Definitely Space Mountain , Big Thunder Mountain Railroad , and pretending they’re too cool to care about It’s a Small World , until they’re humming the song later. The fireworks are pure Disney magic, so don’t leave early and make sure you catch one of the shows will all the characters on the main stage.
Pro Tip : Download the My Disney Experience app and master Genie+ before you go. You’ll need it to skip queues and book rides.
Animal Kingdom
This park might just be my favourite. It’s like a mix of nature documentary and roller coaster thrills. Flight of Passage in Pandora had us all absolutely gobsmacked (and yes, I cried a little). The safari is another highlight, where else can you see giraffes strolling by your jeep as casually as if they own the place?
Pro Tip : Pandora is even more magical at night when everything glows like it’s been sprinkled with pixie dust.
Hollywood Studios
Two words: Star Wars. Whether you’re piloting the Millennium Falcon or joining the Resistance, Galaxy’s Edge is so good it’ll make you believe the Force is real. Toy Story Land is equally brilliant. Slinky Dog Dash is deceptively thrilling and Tower of Terror gave us a family photo that will be talked about for years.
Pro Tip : Early entry is your best friend here. The lines for Rise of the Resistance start building at an alarming rate, so get in before the crowds.
The “Hidden Gems” That Are Totally Worth It
Showcase of Citrus
This place is quirky and fun—a little slice of Florida charm. Picking oranges, feeding farm animals, and bouncing around on a monster truck safari was such a laugh. It’s the perfect low-key break from the theme park madness. Rocco and Tahlia adored feeding the little piglets.
Boggy Creek
This was one of my favourite afternoons on the trip! Taking an hour airboat ride through the marshlands was like a true water safari. It was exhilerating and educational art the same time and the kids loved it too.
Gatorland
The kids couldn’t believe we were ziplining over live alligators. I couldn’t believe I agreed to it. But wow, what a story to tell! Gatorland is weird, wonderful, and just a bit bonkers. The live shows are hilarious (and slightly terrifying).
Dezerland Park Orlando
Rainy day? Overheated? Dezerland is your answer. Go-karts, bowling, and an arcade the size of a small country kept the kids happy for hours. And the car museum? Surprisingly cool.
ICON Park
ICON Park is a lovely way to wind down. The kids loved SEA LIFE Aquarium, while The Wheel gave us incredible views over Orlando. It’s calmer than the parks but still plenty of fun.
A Day in Celebration
Celebration is like stepping into a postcard, with its Disney-designed streets and quaint charm. We spent a delightful afternoon strolling around, indulging in ice cream at Kilwins , and eating at Columbia Restaurant , which serves incredible Cuban-inspired dishes (the paella is divine). For something more casual, Celebration Town Tavern does fantastic seafood.
We had THE MOST MAGICAL time in Orlando and made some very special memories. If you are planning a trip here are some of my top tips...
1. Fast Passes Are a Must : Whether it’s Universal’s Express Pass or Disney’s Genie+, don’t attempt Orlando without a way to skip the lines.
2. Put an AirTag in Your Car : Finding your car in those massive theme park parking lots after a 12-hour day is like finding a needle in a haystack.
3. Invest in a SunPass : Orlando’s toll roads are everywhere, and a SunPass will make your life so much easier.
4. Stay Hydrated : Florida heat is no joke. Bring refillable water bottles and stop for regular breaks.
5. Plan Rest Days : A day at Gatorland or Showcase of Citrus can be a lifesaver when everyone’s feeling theme-parked out.
Orlando with tweens is nothing short of spectacular!
