If you are looking for a trip that combines old-world charm, jaw-dropping views, and just the right amount of adventure? Let me introduce you to Perast in Montenegro and its glamorous neighbour, Dubrovnik. I recently spent five glorious days soaking up the sights, sea, and sunshine, and I can’t wait to tell you all about it. Whether you’re dreaming of historic towns, stunning boat trips, or a sunset kayak in the Adriatic, this trip ticks all the boxes.
Day 1: Arrival in Perast – A Fairytale Welcome
Perast is like stepping into a picture-perfect postcard. With its cobbled streets, Venetian palaces, and the glittering Bay of Kotor as a backdrop, it’s hard not to fall in love at first sight. I stayed at the Heritage Grand Perast , a stunning hotel steeped in history. Think elegant interiors, breathtaking sea views, and the kind of service that makes you feel like royalty.
After settling in, I wandered the quiet streets, stopping for a glass of local wine at a waterside café. Perast’s charm is its tranquility. It’s the kind of place where you can sit back, watch the boats glide by, and feel your shoulders drop a little further with every sip.
Day 2: A Boat Trip to Remember
When in Perast, a boat trip is an absolute must. I hopped on a guided tour to explore the iconic islands of Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George .
Our Lady of the Rocks, with its tiny church perched on an artificial island, is as fascinating as it is beautiful. The legend of how locals built the island by throwing rocks into the sea is enough to make you want to toss one in yourself!
After that, I cruised around the bay, marvelling at the rugged mountains, hidden coves, and crystal-clear water. I took a quick swim in the bay which was refreshing, even if the water was a tad chilly!
The afternoon was all about relaxing back at the hotel pool (cocktail in hand, of course) before dinner at Conte Restaurant , where the seafood is as fresh as it gets. I can still taste the octopus carpaccio!
Day 3: Exploring Kotor and Beyond
A short drive from Perast brings you to Kotor , a UNESCO World Heritage Site bursting with history. The old town is a maze of narrow streets, charming squares, and quaint shops. The climb up the fortress walls is steep, but the panoramic view of the bay is worth every step, just don’t forget your water bottle and some decent shoes!
After Kotor, I ventured to Lovćen National Park . The drive up the winding mountain roads is thrilling, with hairpin bends that offer breathtaking views at every turn. At the top, the Njegoš Mausoleum feels like you’re on top of the world.
Back in Perast, I kept things low-key with a waterfront dinner. The sunset over the bay is pure magic, you won’t want to be anywhere else.
Day 4: From Montenegro to Dubrovnik
It’s hard to say goodbye to Perast, but Dubrovnik was calling, and the two-hour scenic drive didn’t disappoint. On the way, I stopped in Herceg Novi for a quick coffee and a wander through its medieval streets.
Arriving in Dubrovnik is like stepping into a living history book. I checked into the Rixos Premium Dubrovnik , where my room had the most incredible view of the Adriatic. After settling in, I joined a sunset kayaking tour around the city walls. Paddling beneath Dubrovnik’s iconic fortresses as the sun dipped below the horizon was unforgettable. It’s serene, exhilarating, and the perfect way to experience the city from a different perspective.
Day 5: Exploring Dubrovnik and Cavtat
My final day began with a walk around Dubrovnik’s old town. The medieval streets, terracotta rooftops, and ancient walls make it easy to see why they call it the “Pearl of the Adriatic.” I took my time exploring, stopping for gelato and snapping endless photos.
Later, I drove to Cavtat , a charming seaside village just 30 minutes away. It’s quieter than Dubrovnik but equally picturesque. Lunch at Restaurant Bugenvila was a highlight, the views and the food were equally spectacular.
From Cavtat, it was a short drive to the airport, where I boarded my flight home, already planning my next trip to this stunning corner of the world!
